Rattlesnakes

A couple of years ago, one of our dogs, Hattie, a ten pound Jack Russell Terrier, got bit through the eye by a rattlesnake. Here are some before and three after pictures. Hattie is still alive today but her right eye is a little smaller than her left eye.

Hattie is a survivor. Must have been a close call.

that is grisly enough. Has Hattie shown that she has learned from the experience?

This one was for Matt. Hattie replaced Tipper who Matt knew. Tipper had a sudden and tragic death in Minnesota when he died of bloat. Karma caught up to him. And Tim, Hattie hasn't learned. She has post tramatic syndrom that comes out when a certain boy chases her around with rubber snakes, but I have no doubt that she would stick her head in a hole full of rattlesnakes again. It's the nature of the Jack Russell Terrier. I'm the one who has learned. Hattie never gets off the leash in Griffith Park where I go hiking about three times a week. I now keep her tied to my waist at all times.

That head looks pretty rough. She's a lucky one; that Hattie. I guess you can't stop a dog from doing what she is born to do...

Dear Mr. Dog Guy,
Our neighbor has a AmStaff that is nervous and barks all the time. Unfriendly and threatening. What to do?

Tough situation, Matt. Has your neighbor trained the dog to act like that? Does the dog act like that to everyone? Does the dog get exercise? Lots of questions. My dogs are generally aloof, but they get lots of exercise and attention. If they didn't, Zo Zo, who is 7/8ths Australian Kelpie would be psychotic. Hattie happens to be a Jack Russell Terrier which, unfortunately, is more like what you're dealing with. My recommendation is to release half a dozen rattlesnakes in his yard. It's the start of rattlesnake season so I can Fedx them to you tomorrow. Just kidding.

Here's my advice: Talk to the owner. Be friendly. Feel the situation out. Find out about the dog. Be careful about criticizing. Dog owners can be crazy. Information is the key. You might be surprised how many dog problems can be worked out by regularly exercising the dog. Maybe you can work out a deal and get your kid a dog walking job.
